Returning
I describe the project as a civic sanctuary: ritual, memorial and grief care within a landscape.
In the ritual building, I am proposing the possibility of witnessing. At the water edge, I want the release of ashes to remain visible as it joins something larger.
Yet I also say that grief care needs protection from ritual. I am holding a wish to see beside a wish not to be exposed.
The memorial is where I keep imagining people returning: food, stories, objects, art, time with others. There also needs to be somewhere for quiet, individual remembrance. I do not want gathering to turn memory into entertainment.
All of this belongs to the project as I am presenting it. I cannot assume it will belong together easily in space.
I can name the three programmes. I am still trying to understand what passes between them, and what should not.
